What Is The Difference Between Stainless Steel Welded Pipe And Seamless Pipe?

Aug 27, 2024

Stainless steel pipe is widely used and common in our daily life. Stainless steel pipes are divided into two categories based on production methods: stainless steel welded pipes and stainless steel seamless pipes. what is the difference between the two?

Definition:

▪Stainless steel welded pipe, abbreviated as welded pipe, is a steel pipe made by welding commonly used steel or steel strips after being curled and formed by a machine and a mold.

▪Stainless steel seamless pipe is a type of stainless steel pipeline manufactured using seamless joining technology, consisting of a long strip of steel with a hollow cross-section and no seams around the periphery.

Production Process:

▪Stainless steel welded pipe: It is made of steel plates or strips that are rolled and formed by a machine and a mold, and then welded together. During the welding process, a weld seam will be left inside the stainless steel pipe. Welding methods include straight seam welding and spiral welding.

▪Stainless steel seamless tube: Seamless tube is made from a round billet as raw material, perforated with round steel to form a billet, and produced by cold rolling, cold drawing, or hot extrusion methods. The entire stainless steel pipe has no welding points during the forming process.

Performance Characteristics:

▪Stainless steel welded pipe: Due to its process characteristics, it can achieve high-precision wall thickness control, uniform wall thickness, and high surface brightness inside and outside the pipe.

▪Stainless steel seamless pipe: relatively low precision, uneven wall thickness of the pipe, low brightness of the inner and outer surfaces of the pipe, and defects.

Welding Performance:

▪Stainless steel welded pipe: Steel with welded joints has a chemical composition suitable for welding, such as silicon, sulfur, manganese, oxygen, and triangular ferrite mixed in a certain proportion, which can produce a weld melt that is easy to transfer heat during the welding process.

▪Stainless steel seamless pipe: The steel grade composition of seamless pipe only needs to meet the basic requirements of ASTM. Steel pipes lacking the above-mentioned chemical components will generate various unstable factors during the welding process.

Pipeline Strength:

The strength of pipes depends on the alloy composition, so seamless stainless steel pipes and seamless stainless steel pipes containing the same alloy and heat treatment have similar strength.

After tensile testing and three-dimensional vibration testing, the tearing of seamless stainless steel pipes almost always occurs in areas far away from welding points or heated areas. This is because the weld has fewer impurities and slightly higher nitrogen content, so the weld strength is better than other parts.

Application Areas:

▪Stainless steel welded pipes: decorative pipes, product pipes, prop pipes. Low pressure fluid delivery systems, such as conveying water, oil, gas, air, and low-pressure systems for heating hot water or steam.

▪Stainless steel seamless pipe: used in industries such as building decoration, petroleum, chemical, natural gas, power equipment manufacturing, and mechanical equipment manufacturing.
